Sierra College to Celebrate Earth Days April 23 and 24

Save the EarthRocklin, CA – The 2014 Earth Day Celebration on the Rocklin Campus will be held on Wednesday April 23 andThursday, April 24. Events are scheduled throughout both days.

Sierra College has celebrated Earth Day each year since its official world-wide inauguration in April of 1970; 43 years of celebrating our Mother Earth! Earth Day events are free of charge, (excluding the John Muir event) and open to the public, and we welcome and encourage the community to come celebrate with us.

This year the Sierra College Earth Day Celebration will emphasize the human reliance on natural resources for all of our needs and encouraging sustainability in our families, businesses, and communities.  We will be promoting the “6-R’s” (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Return, Refuse, Rethink), conservation and preservation, local foods, local sustainable businesses, local music as well as local watersheds, native flora and fauna, public transportation, and more. 

April 22, 4-5:30pm, Dietrich Theater, PCWA Water Forum (free, open to the public)

  • ·       Panel of speakers from state and local water agencies and Sierra College to talk about local water issues including the drought the Bay Delta Conservation Plan, and water conservation.    

April 23-24, 10am-3pm, amphitheater/campus center:

  • ·         A diverse collection of films that delve into themes including energy, climate change, conservation, wildlife, community activism, environmental justice, and adventure.

April 25, 7:30pm, Dietrich Theatre: Play “Conversation with a Tramp: An Evening with John Muir”

Earth Day will culminate on Friday, April 25, at 7:30 pm in the Dietrich Theatre, with a one-man stage performance by renowned actor Lee Stetson as John Muir, in “A Conversation with a Tramp.”

Schedule of Events for festival on Wednesday & Thursday:

10am – 3pm: Earth Day events at Sierra College will offer live music, great healthy food for purchase, educational, environmental and humanitarian exhibits, plant sale, climbing wall, guided nature walks and speakers to provide entertainment and information.

Ongoing – Dozens of organizations will present information on local watershed issues and opportunities, wildlife rehabilitation, home gardening information, water and energy conservation, transportation solutions, environmentally friendly products, and more.  Nature Preserve Walks guided by biology professors.

Amphitheatre Performances:

The sounds of numerous bands will fill the air, emanating from our Amphitheater. Hip-hop artist and poet, RASAR will perform on both Wed and Thur. Professional juggler, Izzi Tooinsky will entertain the crowd with his amazing juggling talents intertwined with amusing and inspiring story telling.

Sierra College campus is located at 5000 Rocklin road, in Rocklin. There is a $3 parking fee on campus Monday– Friday. Parking is free on the weekends beginning at 4pm on Fridays.

Permits can be purchased at dispensers located throughout the parking lots.
